What Is SQL?

Structured Query Language (SQL) is the foundational programming language used to interact with relational databases. Whether you are building an application, analyzing business metrics, or managing backend data, understanding core SQL terms is an essential first step.
SQL is a standardized language designed for storing, retrieving, updating, and managing data in Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server. Unlike general-purpose programming languages, SQL focuses on what data to retrieve rather than how to retrieve it.
SQL operations are categorized into logical subsets based on their specific functions:
DDL (Data Definition Language): Commands used to define and modify the database structure itself, such as CREATE, ALTER, and DROP.
DML (Data Manipulation Language): Commands used to manage and query the actual data stored inside tables, including SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE.
DCL (Data Control Language): Commands that manage user permissions and database security, such as GRANT and REVOKE.
TCL (Transaction Control Language): Commands that manage database transactions to ensure data integrity, such as COMMIT and ROLLBACK.
Navigating relational databases requires familiarity with these structural building blocks:
Database: A structured collection of data organized for rapid access and management.
Table: A grid-like data structure consisting of rows (individual records) and columns (specific attributes or fields).
Primary Key: A unique column value (or combination of columns) that identifies each specific record in a table without duplicates.
Foreign Key: A column that establishes a link between two tables by referencing the primary key of another table.
Index: A performance tuning feature used to speed up data search and retrieval queries.
