ARTICLE SDG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION. IS EDUCATION ONLY ABOUT PASSING? The issue has now moved beyond a simple disagreement over promotion rules. After the discussion between the university and protestors, Christ university , Delhi NCR said it may advance the supplementary examinations for the affected students. The university is also considering the doubt clearing classes and library access to help them prepare. Amidst all this the protest has raised a much bigger question that ,"What should quality education look like when a student falls behind?".My question directly relates with the SDG4 which aims to ensure equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. I get that the academic standards are important, the attendance benchmark is important but the university can't simply ignore the examinations without meeting a particular academic criteria. At the same time quality education cannot be reduced to marks, attendance and promotion rules alone. Educational Institutions should be balancing the academic standards with the student support, opportunities should be given to to recover from setbacks and systems that help students complete their education. The Christ University case demonstrates why this balance matters. Some of the affected students reportedly had multiple backlogs, while students involved in the protest also raised concerns about individual circumstances, including medical difficulties. The solution, therefore, doesn't need to be a choice between "strict rules" or "no rules". There is a negotiation between both of them. That's what Christ University chose, a perfect middle path of it. . If the university advances the backlog examinations while continuing to uphold its academic requirements, students can be given another opportunity without the institution abandoning its standards. Ultimately, SDG 4 is not simply about providing access to education; it is about ensuring that education remains inclusive, equitable and meaningful. A student’s failure in one examination should be treated as a challenge to overcome, not necessarily as the end of their academic journey.
